Tien Shan Pai Kung Fu

Children's Program

Separate classes are conducted for children, which are similar in most ways to the adult Kung Fu classes. Safety is the primary concern of our instructors in the teaching of young children, followed by helping them to have a good time and enjoy their Kung Fu practice.

Tien Shan Pai's "40 Beat" Form                               Children's Sparring Class

Once enrolled in our school, your child will learn Basic, Technique, Form, and Sparring skills that will help to build his or her confidence in time and with regular class participation. We strive to instill a sense of responsibility of those skills through character-building, and help our younger students develop an awareness of the differences between "fighting" and self-defense. The children's classes are structured in a way that helps each child reach their potential in the martial arts. Our younger students are given both short- and long-term goals that are accessible and help to keep them focused and committed.

All martial arts training begins with basics, but our children's program is almost entirely devoted to a curriculum that reinforces Kung Fu basics. As the child gets older, he or she will be introduced to more challenging material.

The forms taught to children are the same as those taught to adult students. In the beginning, the forms are broken into sections for ease of learning and memorization. As the student progresses in the program, more difficult and exciting forms will be available to them.

Tien Shan Pai's "Plum Flower Fist" Form

The major difference in the adult and children's programs are the self-defense and sparring curriculum. The children's curriculum is more limited in scope and focused on scenarios more likely encountered in the schoolyard, such as being grabbed or pushed. For self-defense training, we emphasize escapes and restraints that are effective and easier to learn and remember for children. In the interest of keeping them safe, we do not encourage our students to resort to punching or kicking in an altercation with another child. The sparring curriculum for children is kept on a level they can understand and retain. Before a student in our children's program is permitted to spar in our school, they must attain intermediate level rank. This ensures that a solid foundation has been established well before the student begins sparring class.
